The easiest way to shelve books is to first sort the books according to the area of the library where they belong.

There are five areas in our library

  • fiction
  • nonfiction
  • reference
  • biography
  • everybody

You can determine which section of the library that the book belongs by looking at the call number that is located on the book's spine.

The books located in each area has a different type of call number.  Please review the Learn About the Library link if you are not familiar with the different areas of the library and the call numbers associated with each.

After the books are sorted then they need to be placed in Dewey and/or alphabetical order.

The following example is placed in Dewey Decimal order:

409          476         499        502        866         999

Cha          Bbc         Div        Qua        Abb         Abb

The following example is also placed in Dewey Decimal order:

601.61    601.612   601.62   611.62   699.2222  729.222

Hat          Bat         Cat        Qua        Abb         Abb

When putting books in Dewey Decimal order, always remember to look at one digit at a time working from left to right (it is just using your math skills).

Using this information:

877.01      877.101

Amc             Aac         is in the correct Dewey Decimal order!
